Does life reflect art? The answer is yes, if we consider TV medical shows a form of art; and if nursing truly represents life. I have lately noticed a positive trend in nursing. Scrubs are becoming more professional. Although some people refer to the new look as “designer scrubs,” these uniforms are not always pricey. Not only are many new styles flattering and coordinated, some maintain a crisp shape after multiple washings. And, there is a growing array of nursing shoes available for our consumption.
Although we would all like to “dress for success,” it is not practical for front line nurses to wear snappy business attire. Imagine giving an enema or emptying a JP drain in a powder-blue pant suit! However, we can still look smart on the floor. Think about it. Some scrubs look more like pajamas than the clothes we give our patients to wear! Like it or not, many patients and peers have negative perceptions about sloppy smock tops. Clothes do matter. People make snap judgments based on first impressions – including their confidence in our education and training, as well as our professionalism.
Consider upgrading your look at work. Subtle changes in your attire can enhance your image (to self and others) and provide a more positive response than you might imagine. Last winter, after receiving a gift certificate to a chic new uniform shop, I upgraded my scrub wardrobe to include a few trendy styles. As with a flattering new hair style, feedback was immediate and positive, and I found myself wondering why I hadn’t splurged a little before.
Due to the nature of our work and the long hours that we labor, comfort and practicality are very important in our profession. But baggy or faded scrubs can add to our stress by compromising our professional image. It is important for all nurses to feel valued and professional in our role. After all, we are all valued professionals!
This need not be an expensive endeavor. Some facilities provide a uniform allowance for their nurses. Depending on your situation, you may be able to itemize non-reimbursed expenses on your tax return.
Does your facility have a uniform code or allowance? What are some other ways to enhance our image as nursing professionals?
